    Dance Production

    Prerequisite: 2 years dance, audition, teacher approval
    Graduation: Satisfies UC/CSU and high school requirements
    Description: This course is for students of intermediate and advanced technical ability. Emphasis will be on choreography, development of stage presence and performance. Successful completion of this coarse requires students to attend all rehearsals, to participate in workshops, seminars, master classes, and attend a minimum of three outside performances and writing a critique based on criteria designated by the teacher to read all resource materials and to be able to demonstrate and verbalize movement based on modern jazz and ballet techniques and to develop critical listening and viewing skills. All student work will be video recorded. Students are responsible for designing and providing costumes for their performances.

    Jazz Dance 1

    Prerequisite: None
    Graduation: Satisfies elective and art/foreign language requirement for graduation.
    Description: Satisfies either a second year of P. E. or Fine Arts requirement. This course is for students with little or no jazz dance training. Students will study various jazz styles, techniques, and characteristics of jazz dance. The fundamentals of jazz dance. Will be covered along with the history and development of jazz dance will be covered along with the history and development jazz dance in America and its influences on other styles of dance. Students will write one research paper on jazz dance and see one local performance. Videos and films will supplement required readings.

    Jazz Dance 2

    Prerequisite: Jazz 1 with a 'C' or better in previous jazz class or recommendation of instructor.
    Graduation: Satisfies elective and art/foreign language requirement for graduation
    Description: This course is for students of intermediate ability. Students must be able to verbalize and demonstrate movement based on jazz techniques. An understanding of dance terminology and vocabulary is also essential. The course will emphasize intense study of jazz styles, characteristics, and expanding techniques. Students will develop their artistic abilities through choreography and/or participation in in-class performances. Students will view and critique at least one local performance. Videos and films will augment required readings distributed by the teacher. Participation in performances is required.

    Technical Theatre

    Prerequisite: Teacher approval
    Graduation: Satisfies elective and art/foreign language requirement for graduation
    Description: This course covers design and construction of stage scenery and lighting. Students will learn to operate all stage equipment and will gain experience in the use of design and color techniques. Students will work as the technical staff for all productions. A focus an acquiring skills in all areas of technical theater will be emphasized.

    Theatre 1 (P)

    Description: This course is an introduction to all areas of theatre. Also studied are dramatic literature, technical theatre, performance, improvision and acting. Students may participate in full scale Broadway productions.

    Theatre 2 (P)

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre 1 and/or instructor's consent
    Graduation: Satisfies elective and foreign/art language requirement for graduation
    Description: This course is designed for those students who want to continue the study of theatre and acting begun in earlier courses. The course covers all areas of the theatre with the emphasis on acting techniques and performance. Students will perform monologues, scenes, mimes, plays, ect. Students may participate in full scale Broadway productions.

    Advanced Theatre (P)

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Theatre 1 and/or instructor's consent
    Graduation: Satisfies both UC/CSU elective and high school fine arts/foreign language requirements for graduation
    Description: This course provides for advanced study of acting and directing techniques for drama students with exceptional ability. This class produces all public productions of the drama department. In addition, students present and direct scenes, monologues and one-act plays for public performance. Attendance at rehearsals and performances are required as part of this course. Students are required to participate in the production of Broadway productions.

    Oral English Advanced (P)

     

    Prerequisite: Acceptance into Conservatory of Arts
    Graduation: Satisfies CSU/UC and high school elective requirement
    Description: Provides and opportunity for advanced practice in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills mandated by tournament completion. Students will present original speeches, literacy interpretations, and essays. Though participation in team and Lincoln-Dougles debate, students will develop advanced argumentation skills.

    Oral English (P)

    Prerequisite: English 1 (P) and teacher recommendation
    Graduation: Satisfies CSU/UC and high school elective requirement as an elective and may be substituted for one year of English requirement
    Description: Students will practice speaking in front of others. Techniques are designed to help students write more effectively as well as speak with confidence by participating in such activities as speeches, interviews, stories, oral interpretations and debates.
