  • Richmond High School - Our School

    Richmond High School first opened in 1907 on Standard Avenue with three classrooms and three teachers.  In 1908, the school was moved to 23?rd? Street, south of Macdonald Avenue.  In 1928, the school was again moved to its present location.  In the 60’s, the site was deemed unsafe, so it was razed and in 1969 the present building was opened. Since the opening in 1969, the campus main building has undergone some interior changes such as having walls added to divide large spaces into contained classrooms and additional portables have been added as well as a two-story science focused building. However, the classrooms located inside the main part of campus have remained windowless. Currently, Richmond High School is one of six comprehensive high schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District that encompasses the cities of Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules as well as the unincorporated areas of El Sobrante, Kensington, and North Richmond.

    RHS works with quite a few Community Based Organizations in order to bring additional support and interventions to the site that we are unable to provide on our own. These CBOs are divided into the areas of mental/physical health, college and career, intervention/enrichment, and safety/security. Below is a thorough (although it may not be comprehensive) listing of these programs:

    The School Based Health Center (SBHC): provides physical and mental health support services. These services are subdivided among the following CBOs:

    ● Contra Costa Public Health, clinic services

    ● YMCA team/the Y-team: mental health counseling

    ● Community Violence Solutions (CVS): My strength boys group as well as a young women’s group and sexual assault advocacy and support services

    ● STAND for families free of violence: facilitates an all girls domestic violence support group

    ● Friday Night Live out of the Center for Human Development: drug/alcohol group ● Community Health for Asian Americans (CHA): Alcohol and other drug group

    ● African American Girls’ Groups: support for African American girls

    ● RYSE: grief group & anger management center

    ● La Chiem: therapeutic behavior service (TBS) behavior management

    ● Brighter Beginnings: young father case management

    ● Family Institute of Richmond

    ● Doctor Salina Perez DDS: Voluntary Dental Screenings

    College and Career Center

    Coordinator: Krista Jann 

    The College and Career Center houses the CBOs that work on campus to support college going culture. In addition, the coordinator organizes the work of the agencies and supports students in reaching their educational and career goals.
