Dear Families:
I’d like to welcome your child to the fourth grade! I am looking forward to a year filled with learning and growth.
My goal is to equip your child with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to be successful in school and in life. As you may know, the District has adopted a new language arts program, Lucy Calkins Reading, Writing, and Phonics. It will be a learning curve for all of us as we adapt to this new program.
In order to create a positive learning environment, I would emphasize the school policy that all personal toys and balls stay home. These items create distractions and also can lead to disagreements among the students. If the item is a learning tool but doubles as a toy, I would appreciate your making sure it stays home. For example, take-apart erasers tend to be used more as a toy rather than as an eraser. Toys brought out will be taken and returned in June to the student.
Students may bring a healthy snack to school. Snack will be at approximately 9:50am. Sometimes, snack time will be adjusted or omitted if there is an assembly or some other conflict with the time. Please keep the snack healthy and something that can eaten with one hand and does not require a spoon or fork. Students will be expected to continue working while eating. Examples of healthy snacks are sliced apples, carrots, bananas, and string cheese. Please peel oranges at home so that time is not wasted and so that your student still can be working. Please do not send juice for snack as the syrup and sugar attract ants. Also, please do not send any food item with nuts due to severe food allergies that some students have. If an unhealthy snack or a snack requiring a spoon/fork is brought, it will be returned to the backpack.
Students may bring a bottle of water to be kept at their desks, but the bottle must have a pop top or a flip top with a straw. Screw top bottles will not be allowed at the desks because of the potential to spill and damage textbooks and the computer tablets.
The primary method of communication will be through the ClassDojo app. We have used this app for a few years now, and many parents like the convenience and speed with which they receive information. Parents also can monitor their child’s behavior on the app. The instructions on how to download the free app and join the class was sent home. Check backpack!
If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please let me know at least one day ahead of time. Please limit the food brought to simple desserts such as cupcakes, cookies, or other treats that do not need to be cut or refrigerated. Please do not send birthday invitations to school for distribution during the school day because this leads to hurt feelings for those children not invited. Please pass out the invitations after school.
Students will do their homework online, and I will send the log-on procedures and instructions home with your student.
I look forward to a great school year, and I will see you at Back to School Night, which is September 5th.
Sincerely,
Ronna Ishida
