• Principal Pierce's Message
    October 2021

    Hello De Anza Family,

It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the new Principal of De Anza High School. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich history of perseverance and commitment to excellence. Our student body is diverse, accepting, and passionate. I feel very fortunate to be part of such a supportive community of families, dedicated staff, and amazing students.

I have been dedicated to the field of education for more than eighteen years. My career began as a substitute teacher in West Contra Costa. Subbing at various school sites, I realized the positive impact I could make in students’ lives. This experience inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Education from Howard University. I then taught Social Studies for eight years in Washington DC and at Kennedy High School. I transferred to the District Office where I provided budget support to schools and principals, but I genuinely missed working with students. I obtained my Administrative Credential and I began working at De Anza High School as an Assistant Principal. During my five years at De Anza, I have worked hard to build relationships with families, students, and staff.  I truly believe that relationships, based on mutual trust and respect, is the foundation of all important work. In September 2021, I was promoted to Principal of De Anza High School.

What I love most about working in West Contra Costa is that this is my community. I was raised in Richmond by a family with a deep belief in hard work and education. When I work with our students, I can relate to their struggles and journey and am able to offer direction based on my lived experiences.

I know this year will be amazing! After 18 months of distance learning, students are still acclimating to attending in-person school. I will continue to work with teachers, staff, and families in supporting students to build their academic confidence and stamina. To do this, we will continue to provide academic experiences that are rigorous and relevant while supporting our students socially and emotionally. I look forward to continuing to build partnerships with families as we pursue academic excellence in a positive and affirming environment.

My message to De Anza students:

You are capable of achieving everything you dream of. Your circumstances are not your limitations and they certainly do not define you or your future. Anything is possible!

    Go Dons!

    Educationally yours,
    Christopher Pierce
    Principal
