School Site Council (SSC)
Every school must have a School Site Council composed equally of school staff and parents or students. Members of the SSC are elected by their peers (e.g., teachers, classified employees, parents, and students). School staff membership must include a majority of neither classroom teachers nor at least one staff member who is neither the principal nor a teacher. The minimum number of SSC members for a middle or high school is twelve. At middle and high schools, students must constitute half of the parent and student membership and together must equal the total school staff membership. A community member may take the place of a parent if chosen by parents of students currently attending the school (Education Code Section 52852).
English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC)
An ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) can be a great asset to a school’s overall environment and to student’s academic achievement. Every effort should be made to offer English learners parents/guardians the opportunity to participate in their child’s education through this vehicle. It is a meeting place that parents/guardians can use as a platform to express their concerns and ideas to the School Site Council (SSC) regarding English learners. ELAC covers broad areas for ELs, such as legal issues involved in working with English learner students and training on how parents/guardians can teach and help their children at home.
African American Parent Advisory Council
The African American Parent Advisory Council is a group of parents/guardians of African American students (along with school staff) coming together to ensure the success of their children, and ultimately all African American students at their school. It is an advocacy group made up of at least 6-8 parents/guardians and 1 Administrator. AAPAC can also include 1-2 teachers and family engagement staff but the majority of the Council members should be parents/guardians.
