First Grade

  • First grade is a huge transition for many students. They are leaving the shorter days of kindergarten behind and stepping out onto the “big yard” for the first time. Students line up on the school yard and are led to class at the 8:30 morning bell and are dismissed at 2:20pm on regular days and 1:45pm on Wednesdays and any other minimum day. First graders share the playground and have lunch period with 2nd and 3rd graders. They are now eating lunch in the Multi-Purpose Room and attend all school assemblies. They also are taking part in more KEF enrichment classes as well as the Caring School Community program which buddies-up upper and lower grade classrooms. Due to the benefits of Class-size Reduction, your child is also now in a class of approximately 20 students which will help with the major transition to longer days and more academic content.

Each year academic expectations increase along with your child’s appetite for knowledge. Please click on the attached link to view the Grade-Level Student Standards outlining what children are expected to learn in mathematics, language arts, writing and science. The publication also includes ideas for activities to help children learn those skills.
