Health and Sex Education in WCCUSD
In January 2016, California adopted a new law covering comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education in public schools. Education Code Sections 51930‐51939 (AB 329).
Comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education is required at least once in middle school and at least once in high school. Abstinence‐only instruction is not permitted. There is no requirement for lower grades, but many elementary sites do provide lessons around anatomy and healthy living in grades 5 and 6.
OPT OUT: Parents or guardians who wish to "opt out" may have their child removed from classes only by a written request submitted to the school.
CURRICULUM PREVIEW: Parents or guardians may preview the curriculum by visiting the school in person, or by contacting the department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) by email HERE.
