August 14 Return to School: Welcome Back School Begins Monday, Aug. 17
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! It has been quite the summer for us, and this school year begins Monday, Aug. 17 like no other year. Thanks to students, families, teachers, school principals, staff, and community partners, we begin the year with a community-driven virtual/distancing learning plan.

August 3 Return To School Update: Tentative Agreement Reached with Teachers Union
I am proud to report that the district and the bargaining unit representing teachers and other certificated staff reached a tentative agreement on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Friday evening that sets expectations for educators and outlines the distance learning environment for students and families for when instruction resumes on August 17.

Kennedy High School Students, Fab Lab Recreate History
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, students at Kennedy High School and the Fab Lab were asked by former Myth Buster's co-host Adam Savage to help recreate the command module hatch from the mission.

Freedom School Comes To WCCUSD
Freedom School has come to West Contra Costa Unified School District for its first year. The Children's Defense Fund's Freedom School provides a safe, fun, and fulfilling learning experience for 50 children from Stege and Nystrom Elementary Schools.

Rev. Shumake Receives Jefferson Award for Work with Mafanikio Program at Nystrom
Jacqueline Martin was so impressed with Rev. Andre Shumake’s leadership of the Mafanikio program and the impact it’s had on her grandson, D’jae Harrell, that she nominated him for the Jefferson Award for community service that he was recently awarded by KPIX Channel 5.

State Postpones Athletics Until at Least December
As anticipated the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and North Coast Section (NCS) delayed the start date for athletics until at least December due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
